CORNERS THAT SURROUND US (Family Portrait)
2023-2024

Families are fragments: individual and collective experiences assembled in unison and disarray. The challenge of representing a family in a singular image leaves me with more questions than answers. The family portrait is problematic because it leaves out the evolving relationship dynamics impacted by evolving identities, immigration, secrets, desires, and regrets. Against these constraints, this mixed media sculpture reunifies the family with the objects and corners that surround and contain them.

My sculpture is fragments, gathering the components of the family in one place. The spatial mobility slows down the act of looking, and invites viewers to question the politics of seeing: both the assumptions they bring, and the perspective of the photographer. Truth is subjective, as the viewer changes perspective, the truth changes.
